Flight by Lifehouse: a piano ballad about flying away from life’s storms

Artist: Lifehouse
Writer: Jason Wade
Year: 2014

The single was released as an introduction or teaser for the group’s 7th studio album, which is to be released on May 19th, 2015. The Christian theme of this lyric is quite strong. The person that is needed, as mentioned in the lyric could also refer to a woman he needs in his life, but somehow this interpretation doesn’t fit in with all the lyrics.

I’ve lost my balance
I fell from the trapeze
This act isn’t easy

He has (figuratively) lost his balance while performing on the trapeze, “a short bar that is hung high above the ground by two ropes and that is held by circus performers“. He has been acting as if he was fine and showing the world that he was at a high place in his life but he doesn’t think he can continue with this act for much longer.

I’ve been under water
This storm has been raging

When there is a storm, its usually on the surface of the sea that the storm is visible. However, under the water the storm isn’t as visible because you can’t feel a change in the wind or waves. He uses this difference to show that his life has been caught in a raging storm, but he has been hiding under the water, where he could ignore the obvious signs of the storm.

These nights I’m not sleeping
My dreams are now strangers to me
And I need you now

The dreams or aspirations that he used to have are not what he wants anymore, those dreams are like strangers to him now. All of this has made him have sleepless nights. He now says that he needs God.

There’s too many miles on my bones
I can’t carry the weight of the world
No, not on my own

He has felt like he has had to carry all his problems by himself, but he can’t do it alone anymore. His bones, or his entire structure has walked for far too many miles with all his problems.

Your eyes are like lightning
Your voice is like water
This place is a desert

His life has become like a desert, and generally what a desert most ardently needs is the rain. The rain is usually preceded by lightning. God’s eyes or the vision of God give him the promise of the water his life needs. God’s voice or God’s word is the water his life needs.

I’ve been walking in circles
I’m screaming for answers
I might fall into pieces
Or maybe I’m finally breaking through

He has a lot of questions to which he desperately wants answers. He has been going through the same set of questions that have kept him going round and round without being able to get to the answers. It has come to the point where he feels like he can’t stand it anymore, but this may also be the point where he finally emerges from the endless circle of questions and gets his answers.

No more running, no more hiding
No more hurting, no more crying
No more trouble, no more sighing
No more falling, no more striving
No more heartache, no more fighting
No more fears, only flying

He no longer feels hurt, trouble, failure, heartache or fear. He is not going to cry, sigh, strive or fight anymore either. This is because he’s only going to fly from now, because he is free.

In short, this lyric seems to be about someone who has had a lot of problems and questions in his life. He realizes he needs God and the voice of God becomes the water his life desperately needs. Now because of this he is free from all the past problems that were in his life.
